Pilates for Joint Stabilization and Mobilization

Joint mobility can be impaired by alterations in arthrokinematic motion, osteokinematic motion, or both.  Instability is an excess range of arthrokinematic or osteokinematic movement for which there is no muscular control. Normal mobility requires adequate tissue length to allow for full range of motion (ROM) and the neuromuscular skill to accomplish movement. Decreased mobility has a profound effect on done and soft tissue, reflecting the body’s ability to adapt to various levels of loading. Biomechanical accommodations are made by substituting other joints of limbs to achieve function. A specific Pilats-based exercise program can be a very effective way to improve functional ROM about a joint.
